Cardboard remains are recycled and reused to make more boxes

Pandemic and online trade trigger demand for recyclables

All countries opted for sustainable development. The approach to the relationship between social, economic and environmental concerns has led to a market balance aimed at human well-being. In this process, the digital trade boom has a great responsibility as it has been one of the few economic sectors benefiting from the pandemic.

When citizens around the world were confined, they had no choice but to go to the Internet for their purchases. Since then our homes have been filled with cardboard boxes and as a result, carton recycling containers were also filled.

Internet purchases are accompanied by a strong use of boxes and Recyclable paper and paperboard containers.

The municipal selective collection of paper and cardboard in Spain has not stopped growing ever since. According to the latest statistics reported, in 2019 the rate of paper recycling in Spain was 75%, 4.5% more than the previous year. According to data from Aspapel (Spanish Association of Pasta, Paper and Cardboard Manufacturers), the Spanish Paper Industry is the third most recycling company in the European Union.

According to figures provided by Ecoembes the citizens who have more kilograms of paper and cardboard per inhabitant recycle in the blue container are those of Aragon: 32.1 kg; Balearic Islands: 34 kg and Basque Country: 32.1 kg. While the least kilograms are deposited in the blue container are those of Castilla-La Mancha: 10 kg; Murcia: 11 kg and Andalusia: 11.2 kg.

On the other hand, the recycling industry has increased employment generation in all Spanish regions. More and more public administrations decide to devote their resources to recycling plants and processes, a secure source of income for the future.

Recycling, the basis of a green economy

Recycling is the basis of the green economy, not only because of its ecological advantages, but also because of its positive intervention in economic development. Its application is the seed where to work for a better world for all.

In other countries the same situation exists. According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, American recycling centers enjoy a productive frenzy thanks to cardboard. Municipal harvesting has increased by 7% since the beginning of the pandemic, and cardboard already accounts for one third of the total processed in plants.
