Public policies to improve recycling

Public policies to improve recycling

The confinement and restrictions resulting from the Covid-19 have led to a change of habits in all of us, who, as we spend more time at home, devote more efforts to recycling household waste and to housing care.

In the same way, municipalities, responsible for boosting and facilitating recycling among citizens, gradually recognize the importance of their role and design effective public policies, which represent significant increases in numbers.

Facilitate access to recycling points

This time it was the City of Granada, through Inagra (Enviromental Engineering Granadina https://www.inagra.es/), which managed to increase recycling by placing more than 600 recycling points with a total of 1,247 new containers: 533 containers, 412 paper-carton, 260 glass and 42 other materials.

The Environment Council noted that, following the introduction of more than 600 recycling points, known as Ecopoints, recycling has been increased by 21% in the case of packaging.

For the implementation of this initiative, a total of 1,500 containers have been required to be moved for 6 months to facilitate access and encourage recycling.

This way when citizens go down to deposit their daily garbage they can use it to recycle the rest of the waste, without having to move anywhere else.

Double the number of recycling points

The project has meant doubling the number of Ecopoints in a year so that the distance between homes and recycling points is not an impediment or an excuse to not recycle.

As a result of this environmental strategy of the municipality of Granada, the target has been achieved and in the first months of 2021, recycling of all materials has increased.

  • 21% in the case of packaging,
  • 2% in paper and cardboard,
  • 2% in glass
  • A decrease of the remaining fraction of almost 10%.”

In total, in these three months of 2021 1,206 tons were collected in containers, in paper-carton 1,638 tons, in glass 1,085 and in organic 24,120 tons.

In total, in Spain in 2020 they were reached more than 18 million tonnesBut it broke the growth of the last few years. Metal waste is more than 60% of recycled material, followed by paper and cardboard, with more than 20%, wood with 8%, glass with 5% and plastic with 4%.
