A digital world wrapped in cardboard boxes

Internet shopping drives cardboard, while paper is replaced by digital reading.

Currently an increase in the number of products purchased via the Internet is visible, all of this is part of a global trend that indicates that the increasing digitization leads to a strong rise in the manufacture of cardboard, also in Spain.

Because, while graphic paper is devoured by screens, cardboard has become a great ally of new technologies. That is why the widespread belief that analogism is associated with paper and not digital is only a half-truth. The take-off of cardboard and wrapping papers augurs for a long life for pulps despite the digitization of our lives.

“Tablets, phones and computers have revived cardboard consumption,” explains Bernard Lombard, industrial policy director at the Confederation of European Paper Industries. The organization reports 2.6% growth in packaging materials in Europe last year. In Spain, the increase is even greater. Figures for the first nine months of last year point to an 8.5% rise in packaging paper consumption, according to Aspapel, which brings together pulp, paper and cardboard producers. Its data show that overall paper consumption remains below 2000 levels. Cardboard, however, has increased by between 7 and 38.5%, depending on the type, compared with 2000.
