In a note released in Brussels last week, the FEFCO (European Federation of Corrugated Board Manufacturers) announced that the corrugated cardboard industry will continue production to supply packaging for all essential goods.
"We would like to reassure the public, our customers and partners and let them know that the corrugated cardboard is producing enough transport packaging for those sectors that are now essential, such as pharmaceuticals, food and beverages or medical equipment. Most corrugated cardboard plants in Europe are working at high speed to ensure delivery to these essential sectors."
Almost all plants are fully functional and so far the transportation of raw materials has not become a major problem.
"The industry urges governments to keep open borders and provide transport that is vital for the food sector," said FEFCO General Secretary Angelika Christ. The EU Commission has issued guidelines for effective border management, protecting health and preserving the integrity of the internal market to prevent shortages of medical equipment or food.

In adapting the recommendations of WHO and other institutions in plants, the corrugated cardboard minimize the risk of stops due to COVID-19. FEFCO appreciates the dedication and commitment of all those working in the sector.
Europe's corrugated cardboard industry produces around 43.9 billion square metres of cardboard per year, enough to cover Denmark. It comprises 401 companies and 700 plants, and accounts for 100,000 jobs. The corrugated cardboard industry delivers high-performance packaging, with thousands of possible combinations of board types, depths, weights, adhesives and coatings to meet every need arising from a situation like the one we are experiencing.
