According to the Spanish Association of Corrugated Cardboard Packaging and Packaging Manufacturers (AFCO), in 2011, Spain achieved a total production of 4,229 million square meters of corrugated cardboard, with a volume growth of 0.53% compared to 4,207 million in the previous year. To do this, 2,566,013 tons of paper were consumed in corrugating machine.

With these figures, Spain remains the fourth European producer of corrugated cardboard, behind Germany, Italy and France and ahead of Britain.

The sector has reached a total turnover of 4,030 million euros during the financial year 2011, of which 2,360 million are direct turnover and the remaining 1,670, indirect. This figure is approximately 0.4 per cent of Spain's gross domestic product.

The average consumption of corrugated cardboard Per capita per year stood at 49.03 kilograms for 2011. For comparative purposes, it should be noted that the European countries averaged 39.94 kilograms in 2010. It should be recalled that from 1990 onwards a take-off began in the Spanish consumption ratio per inhabitant per year, which reached its peak in the period 2002-2004. In 2010, the Spanish figure was still above the European average, at a considerable distance.
