Spanish cardboard cradle boxes

Spanish cardboard baby boxes

A few months ago, on this very “screen”, we talked about Finnish cardboard baby boxes. We explained that they were originally a gift first distributed in the Nordic country in 1938, initially only to low-income families. This changed in 1949, when they began to be distributed to all expectant mothers. To receive the box, mothers had to be examined by a doctor and attend a public prenatal clinic before the fourth month of pregnancy.

Some time ago, a Spanish couple, María and Rubén, learned the story of this baby box while expecting their first child. They were amazed, realizing how little was really needed to raise a healthy, happy baby. Their first goal was to find a way to obtain one of these Finnish cardboard baby boxes.

The couple searched far and wide to find one, as these cardboard cot boxes were not sold in Spain. They therefore decided to embark on a project to make Spanish cardboard cot boxes a reality. “We thought about designing a box similar to the Finnish one,” they explain, “to sell in Spain and give parents who wanted to buy one for their babies the chance to do so conveniently, without the shipping costs of buying it abroad.”

The Suvituuli cardboard cuckoo box is very useful for babies to sleep in until four or five months, then it can be used to store clothes or toys

After months of work and effort, María and Rubén were able to make their dream come true of creating their own Finnish box, also thanks to designer Diego Mir. The result was Suvituuli, which means “fresh summer breeze” in Finnish: an understated yet warm, colourful, cheerful and comfortable box in which babies can sleep until they are four or five months old.

Advantages of a cardboard cot box

According to their creators the advantages of using this type of cot are many:

  1.  Being small, they offer the baby a reduced space that provides protection and safety.
  2. The cardboard box can also be used as a changer if we cover it.
  3. It's light and easy to transport so we can take her on a trip.
  4. Once we are no longer useful as a cradle, the cardboard box can be used to store baby clothes or toys.
  5. As cardboard is an easily recyclable and low-cost material, this cradle is totally ecological and economical.
