The corrugated cardboard industry
As logic would suggest, the paper industry is very interested in maintaining its important source of raw material: forests. The current trend in supplying wood for paper production is to cultivate fast-growing trees (eucalyptus, pine, radiata…). Fast-growing species perform an important environmental role, as they absorb four times more carbon dioxide than slow-growing species. Today, more than 80% of the paper used to manufacture corrugated cardboard has been recycled.
The corrugated cardboard is the most natural choice for packaging. It is made from paper, which is a raw material of natural, renewable, recyclable and biodegradable origin. It does not harm the human being or alter the conditions of the products it carries.
The more trees are used, the larger the forest.
The principle of introducing a wave into a support structure has been known since ancient times and has been used in buildings and bridges to combine resistance with material economy, thus avoiding waste of resources and excess weight.
What might seem an enormous contradiction has long been a reality. The corrugated cardboard industry has focused its efforts on producing more while consuming less. Modern forestry techniques (long-cycle agriculture) meant that European forests grew by more than 10% in the 1980s. This figure is highly significant, since 90% of the wood used for paper comes from European forests. Only between 1% and 2% comes from tropical areas, as most of these woods are unsuitable for paper production.
